2014 Hockey Playing rule changes

All players (including Juniors) should take note of the rule changes.

As you are aware we play by the rules in the FIH rule book with a couple of additions ( ie, the green card 2 minute suspension,  no time out in grades 2 to 7 ).

The own goal this was a mandatory experimental rule and FIH have moved to discontinue this ruling from the beginning of the European Winter season. Hockey Australia have brought this forward to the beginning of the Australian 2014 Winter season so This rule no longer applies for our competition”.

Playing the ball in the airIn general play there is no change “Players must not play the ball with any part of the stick when the ball is above shoulder height “

Playing the ball in the air when defending a shot on goals – “Defenders are permitted to use the stick to stop or deflect a shot at goals at any height.” Please note the wording “stop or deflect  a shot” if the ball is above shoulder height a defender. It is NOT allowed to “ GENUINELY HIT “ the ball. ( Penalty stroke is awarded if the shot is on goals, a short corner is awarded if the ball is above shoulder height and missing goals). In all cases the context of dangerous play must be considered.

Green card – remains a 2 minute penalty in all grades.

It should be noted that when some major events are held often they are played under special rules, sometimes these “special rules” are sanctioned by FIH sometimes not, it should be remembered that these “special rules” only apply to those tournaments ( generally where highly skilled players are involved ) and do not change the condition of play adopted by Hockey Australia or HNSW for general Association Competitions.

Plus a reminder from Sharon – Short Corner breaking – players will still be sent to 1/2 way.
